Teaching Statement

Plato once gave the following caution: “Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”

My teaching philosophy springs in large part from this notion: that the goal of learning should be to incite, and not simply to impart. I believe that an educated mind neither approaches the world with glassy-eyed indifference nor shrinks from it in fear. Instead, an educated mind eagerly engages the world, driven by a sense of discovery and a readiness to set aside bias and presumption.

As a teacher, I present my students with material that challenges their views of themselves and of the world. I employ technology and contemporary examples, using the familiar to explain and illustrate the unfamiliar. My goal is to encourage them to probe and analyze materials, comprehend various points of view and take a well articulated, rationally supported stand.
