On February 4, 2011 the AJC ruled against four students who were reported to have violated the Examination Honour Code and the University’s Code of Ethics. The students were reported to have been seen using their mobile phones, asking for help, exchanging papers during the examination and collaborating to lie before the committee.
Sanctions:
a) Student A received three (3) Fs in the courses that the student was seen to be cheating in. Because the student accepted responsibility the committee decided on a suspension and not expulsion due to the mulitiple offences committed. However, the three F’s resulted in a GPA below 1.5 and a subsequent academic dismissal.
b) Student B received an F in the course that the student admitted to cheating in. The student is also required to be an advocate for the honour code by speaking to the first year class.
c) Student C received two F’s in the courses that the student cheated in is also required to be an advocate of the honour code by speaking to the first year class.
d) Student D received an F in the course and a suspension for a semester. This was because the student did not accept guilt despite overwhelming evidence and information and lied before the committee several times.
Lessons Learned:
The AJC would especially like to advise students of the following:
- Students should be knowledgeable about all aspects of the honour code.
- Students who reported the violations are commended for supporting the Honour Code, keeping their friends accountable and protecting the university’s reputation and brand.
- Honesty is the best policy. When you are caught and confronted, admit guilt.
