On May 21, 2013 the Ashesi Judicial Committee (AJC) ruled in a case of misconduct involving a student from C2013, during the mid-semester exam for the Investment course. The AJC has concluded that the student is guilty of violating the Examination Code of Conduct, which is stated on Page 34 of the Handbook:
“During an examination students must leave mobile phones and other electronic communication devices switched off.”
According to the handbook, failure to abide by the Exam Code of Conduct constitutes a violation of the Examination Honour Code, and must be adjudicated by the AJC. (p.35)
The information presented at the hearing confirmed that the student’s cell phone was on during the exam, and was looked at during the exam.
After deliberating, the AJC came up with the sanction below:
- The student will receive a failing grade (E) for the Investment course.
The Committee encourages students to consider how a lack of awareness or commitment to abide by rules and codes of conduct, even in the face of less than perfect situations, can result in unwanted repercussions. We hope this will be a valuable lesson and will serve to strengthen the student’s appreciation of rules and guidelines.
The AJC would especially like to advise students of the following:
- The Examination Code of Conduct must be strictly adhered to and students should consult the Student Handbook to refresh their knowledge of it.
- The minimum sanction that the AJC issues a student if found guilty is a failing grade (E) for the course.
- Should students find themselves in an examination hall without a functioning clock, they should notify the invigilator before the exam starts and request that a functioning clock or timekeeping assistance be provided.
