April 27, 2016 – In a brief ceremony at the Todd and Ruth Warren Library, the Ashesi Library Committee launched the Ashesi Reading Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to encourage members of the community to develop the habit of reading.
“The idea is to make you do something a little bit differently from what you normally do,” said Nina Chachu, Head Librarian. “Reading makes you a better person and this challenge is also a way to use the long vacation to broaden your minds.” As part of the challenge, members of the community who wish to participate are required to read, review and submit summaries of a minimum of five books from the library, over the summer break. At the end of the summer, winners will be awarded prizes ranging from Kindles to book vouchers from Amazon.
The Ashesi Library Committee is made up of library staff and some faculty members with the goal of making the library and its services more accessible to members of the community. Aside the central goal of encouraging people to read, for the committee, the challenge was also to mark World Book Day and to commemorate the legacy of William Shakespeare.
“We launched the challenge to celebrate writers, illustrators and readers,” said David Sampah, member of the Library Committee. “The idea is to encourage everyone, including staff, students and faculty, within the community to read more.”
