As one of the first Universities in Africa to adopt the liberal arts model of education, Ashesi is happy to announce that we have been accepted into the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA). The GLAA is an international, multilateral group of liberal arts institutions with the goal of supporting excellence and cooperation in liberal arts education across different countries. Members include the College of Wooster, the American University in Cairo and Oberlin College.
The GLAA is currently made up of 28 universities, including Ashesi, led by the Great Lakes Colleges Association. Its programmes are designed to benefit member institutions’ academic mission and strategic priorities, and to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.
“The GLAA opens up the whole world to Ashesi,” says Provost, Dr. Marcia Grant. “We can now have stronger relationships with universities from Hong Kong to Nigeria. The GLAA has some of the finest liberal arts universities in the world, and being a part of the group really opens up a lot of opportunities to increase Ashesi’s international activity.”
Joining the Alliance means Ashesi now gets the opportunity to engage with the expertise of other member institutions, build stronger research and global learning partnerships and strengthen our liberal arts model in Ghana. Ashesi is one of three African universities that are part of the Alliance.
According to Rick Detweiler, President of the Great Lakes Colleges Association, “Membership in this Alliance is by invitation only, and is offered exclusively to those highest quality universities that are committed to the development of each student’s potential through an internationally-oriented education in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences – an education designed to prepare people who will make constructive contributions in our ever-changing global context. It is clear that Ashesi excels in these ways. Further, in the recent meeting of presidents and academic officers of other Global Liberal Arts Alliance member institutions, Ashesi’s many contributions and valuable involvement made it clear that there are many partnership opportunities for Ashesi with other Global Liberal Arts Alliance members.”
We look forward to an active and mutually beneficial collaboration with member colleges and universities of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance!
