As a move towards engaging students in conversations about appropriate dressing, Ashesi’s Career Services Centre, together with the Ashesi Business Club, organised a fashion event on campus that focused on style and outer image, and how the two contributed to success. The event, named SOS, was designed to educate students on the need to pay attention to what they wear regardless of the environment they may find themselves in.
Jennifer Agyeman, Image and Life Coach, and founding director of Amazing-U, joined the students to share professional advice. Student models wore different outfits for various settings, hit a makeshift catwalk, and received feedback from their peers on whether their outfit was appropriate or inappropriate. Jennifer helped moderate the session, driving the discussion with students around how the modeled outfits could be improved for the setting they were being worn for.
“I have always had a problem understanding what dress codes meant, and the event helped me solve this problem,” said Martha Kumi ’14. “It was particularly useful that we were shown what to do rather than told what to do. I loved it.”
“It is necessary to get students thinking about what their appearance is saying to other people,” said Abigail Lartey, Assistant Career Services Director. “It was great to see the students engaged, and we plan to continue to have more conversations with them on the subject.”
