The annual Ashesi Babson Business Seminar took place on 7th January, 2011 at Ashesi University. Once again, it brought together students from Babson College and Ashesi University to engage business executives in spirited discussions on a variety of topics.
Professor Dennis Hanno, Dean of the Undergraduate School at Babson, explained how the relationship between Ashesi and Babson has grown over the past four years. Ashesi hosted the first business seminar for Babson students in 2008, which has become an annual event. Starting in 2009, every year one Ashesi student is selected for a scholarship to attend Babson College for a semester. In 2010 Babson and Ashesi joined together to launch a micro-venture fund to support small-scale businesses in Ghana.
Dr. Lloyd Amoah, Lecturer at Ashesi, then gave an insight into the political system in Ghana with emphasis on the implications for regional stability of the Ivoirian crisis. Henry Kyeremeh, from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, then pointed out highlights of Ghana’s 2011 national budget, with emphasis on how the budget had been allocated.
After a short break, three entrepreneurs shared some of their experiences from managing businesses in Ghana. Kwei Quaye Foli (’09), Founder and CEO of Sci-fi IT Services, Elikem Nutifafa Kuenyehia, a lawyer with Oxford & Beaumont, and Esi Woarabae Cleland, blogger and Co-founder of Afro-Chic clothing company, led this session.
