The ARX 2013 team consists of two members of faculty and twenty-one students, with members of staff working in volunteer roles.
Faculty & Staff
Gertrude Ayorkor Korsah
Dr. Korsah teaches Artificial Intelligence/Robotics, Programming 1, 2 & 3, Data Structures and Algorithm at Ashesi. She has Ph.D. in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. She also has an MSc. in Engineering and MSc. Computer Science from Dartmouth College, Hanover. Early this year, Dr. Korsah co-founded the Africa Robotics Network, which aims to help get more people in Africa interested in Computer Science through Robotics.
Aelaf Dafla
Aelaf teaches Web Technologies, E-Commerce, Operating Systems and System Administration, Computer Organization & Architecture and Programming at Ashesi. He has an MSc. Electronic Science from Pune University in India. He has a strong interest in the electronics and the application of technologies like mobile phones and the Internet to improve healthcare delivery,
Lady-Asaph Lamptey ‘12
Lady studied Computer Science at Ashesi, and is the Project Assistant for the ARX program. In her senior year, Lady developed an Akan programming language that could help many young Ghanaians learn programming and the problem-solving skills it helps teach without the barrier of learning a foreign language first. Her aim is to eventually deploy the tool in basic schools in rural Ghana. The ARX program has a somewhat similar goal to Lady’s, which is why she is excited to be a part of it. Lady is Project Assistant for ARX 2012.
Daniel Botchway ‘13
Daniel is a Computer Science major, and is in his senior year at Ashesi. He has tutored students at both Ashesi’s Mathematics and Programming Resource Centers, contributed to a teaching project at a deprived school in Accra, and recently completed a course in cryptography. Daniel loves to read, write code, or watch movies when he can. He hopes the ARX will be a wonderful learning experience, and an opportunity to have fulfilling interactions with younger and eager Ghanaian students.
Antoinette Doku ‘14
Antoinette is a Computer Science major in her junior year at Ashesi. She teaches mathematics to students at Berekuso’s Junior High School, as well as to participants of an adult learning program at the Nima Library in Accra. She likes to read online, and enjoys keeping up with current affairs. Antoinette sees the ARX as a chance to help curious students like herself, as well as sharpen her own computing and mentoring skills.
Wumpini Hussein ‘14
Wumpini is a Computer Science major in his senior year and is one of the project assistants for ARX 2013. He tutors students at Ashesi’s programming resource centre and recently discovered an interest in robotics. He is passionate about programming and video games, and wants to pursue a career in game engine programming. In his spare time he loves programming, playing video games, reading, and discovering new technology. His experience in the programming resource center has made him passionate about sharing knowledge, and strongly believes that through programs like ARX, Africa can in the future be recognized as a creator of modern technology.
Mentors
Joseph Mills '14
Joseph is a Business Administration major in his senior year at Ashesi. His love and enthusiasm for technology and prior experience in programming from his introductory classes at Ashesi were factors that influenced his move to be a part of ARX 2013. Joseph has teaching experience from his participation in an annual reading project for kids at the Mamprobi Gale community library. He is a member of the Ashesi basketball team and currently serves as the Acting Commissioner of the Ashesi Basketball Association. Joseph is looking forward to an exciting learning experience at ARX 2013, and hopes to share his passion for technology, volunteering, and excellence in leadership with the younger participants.
Jennifer Agbenowosi ‘14
Jennifer is a Management Information Systems major. Jennifer is a volunteer Mathematics tutor at the Berekuso Basic School, and is also a Math coach at the Math Resource Centre here at Ashesi. Jennifer enjoys being around young teenagers and children and always looks out for ways she can positively impact their lives. She hopes to become a systems analyst. Jennifer believes her experience at the ARX, as a learner and a mentor, will give her the chance to build upon her final year project work, and also guide her as she thinks about how she can mobilize young teenagers, interested in technology, to create technology that can help the Ghanaian economy.
Daniel Ankomah ‘14
Daniel is a Computer Science major in his senior year at Ashesi. He has been tutoring math and programming in the local Berekuso school for the past two years, as well as in the Ashesi Learning lab. He is passionate about learning because he believes that life is a never-ending cycle of refinement hence the opportunity to learn and teach should always be embraced. He envisions technology as the solution to Africa's problems and looks forward to being a part of this journey.
Henry Olletey '14
Henry is a final year Computer Science major who is keenly interested in the science of problem solving. He is also curious about how these elements can be employed in understanding computers and how they work, using this knowledge to further diagnose and attempt to solve Africa's problems. Henry is passionate about teaching, soccer and all genres of music, especially rap.
Fred Asiedu ‘14
Fred is a final year student at Ashesi, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He has shown great interest in mentoring younger students, as he participated in a “Pathways NGO” program, in May 2012, where he taught 4th grade students to read, write and act plays. Fred loves to explore, and enjoys diversity in his academic life. He is excited to be part of the ARX mentorship team of 2013.
Esi Yeboah Yenuva '15
Esi is a Computer Science major student who loves to solve day-to-day problems she identifies in her environment using technology. She teaches Mathematics and Information Communication Technology (ICT) to students at Berekuso’s Junior School. As a math tutor in the Ashesi Resource Centre, Esi also enjoys the privilege of assisting other students on campus with challenging math based work. During her leisure Esi loves to play chess or work on developing state-of- the-art technology. For Esi, ARX will be a good opportunity for Senior High School Students to get a first-hand experience of problem solving using the Robot C language.
Kingston Coker ‘15
Kingston is a Computer Science major whose interest in robotics was aroused by his "exciting childhood activities" (which normally got him in trouble): taking apart radios and other household devices just to understand how all the parts worked together and their individual functions. He sees ARX 2013 as the go-ahead to live his childhood dreams, experiment with technology and teach younger “destroyers” about his experiences. ARX will present the perfect opportunity to sharpen his leadership skills and expose other minds to the beauty of technology.
Abigail Sefakor Dzomeku '14
Abigail is a Management Informations Systems with experience working with younger students from her work with the Berekuso Reading Project, which was aimed at teaching primary school children to read and write. She has also previously served as a volunteer tutor to primary and junior high students at the Village of Hope in Gomoa Fetteh. Her participation in ARX is fuelled by her desire to get more Ghanaian students involved and excited about Computer Science. During her spare time, she enjoys reading, designing and developing new things, making new friends, chatting and engaging in social networking.
Chloe Acheampong '15
Chloe is a Computer Science student who loves to work with children and has volunteered as a math tutor at the Berekuso Junior High School. She is interested in user interface design and web development. She is excited about the ARX programme because the subject of robotics fascinates her. She believes in the impact of critical thinking and quantitative reasoning and believes ARX will be a good platform to sharpen these skills, as well as mentor young people to do same.
Ebenezer Agoe-Ashiakwei '14
Ebenezer is a Management Information Systems major, and enjoys working with children. He helped tutor senior high school students at Hope College in Gomoa Fetteh, as part of a Community Service initiative. Ebenezer loves working with computers and likes to take them apart and understand how they are built. He anticipates a successful robotics experience and looks forward to mentoring the students.
Amanda Olive Amoah '16
Amanda is a Business Administration major at Ashesi, who likes to read, sing, and participate in other creative activities such as writing. She enjoys interacting with children and looks forward to having an amazing time during the Ashesi Robotics Experience - learning new things and being able to share them with others.
Niena Rahma Alhassan '15
Niena is a Management Information Systems major who has always been curious about computers and the way they work. She loves to read and is interested in the design of things. She hopes to play bigger roles in projects that involve the youth, and believes ARX will give her more experience as a mentor.
Kwadwo Busumtwi '15
Kwadwo is Computer Science major who has been involved in peer turoring activities since high school. He enjoys reading, taking on new initiatives and watching how his favourite team, Arsenal F.C, progresses in the Barclays Premier League. I am looking forward to ARX, not only because I get another chance to lead a group of students and build strong tutor-pupil relationships with them, but also because I hope to garner more knowledge in the field of robotics.
Nanette Taylor '15
Nanette Taylor is a Management Information Systems major, and is in her sophomore year at Ashesi. She is very interested in programming and hopes to build a career along those lines. She loves working with children and having new experiences. She believes ARX will be a good opportunity to do this.
Martha Kumi '14
Martha is a Management Information Systems major at Ashesi. She was a mentor for Ashesi Junior Entrepreneurs Network (AJEN) camp held in Ghana and Liberia between June and July and was also part of the AshCon Liberia project held in July. She loves to read, write, blog, volunteer for community service, play video games and watch movies. Martha has always been interested technology can be used to make learning easier for students, and hopes that ARX will give her some knowledge and experience on how to make the best out of this passion.
Korkor Kotey-Afutu '15
Korkor is a Computer Science major at Ashesi and tutors at the university’s programming resource center. She is very passionate about programming and hopes to pursue a career in Cryptography and robotics and most importantly help students enjoy technology and Computer Science as much as she does.
Kelvin Odartey Wellington '14
Kelvin is a Computer Science major, and has tutored freshmen in Ashesi’s Programming Resource Centre. He also serves as a member of the student government’s Sports Committee and loves to read, write code and watch football. He hopes the ARX will help him gain some insight in Robotics, which is a field of computer Science he is yet to explore, and will provide an avenue for him to share his passion for technology
with the younger generation.
Francis Delali Vorgbe '14
Delali studies Computer Science at Ashesi, and is excited about how the subject, particularly robotics, can be used as a tool to overcome many of the challenges faced locally. He was introduced to computer science at college level and is passionate about offering young Ghanaians the chance to discover the exciting possibilities the field offers at a much earlier age. Delali views ARX as an opportunity to both learn from and teach young, eager Ghanaians who share similar interests.
Rhoda Nana Akua Anokyewaa Appiah '15
Rhoda is a Management Information Systems major, and is enthused about child education. She was a key brain behind a recent Spelling Bee competition organized for Berekuso students, and took the initiative to tutor some of them in preparation for the competition. Through her journey at Ashesi, she has discovered a new love for technology and its application in problem solving. She is looking forward to infusing the high school students with the same excitement she gets from Robotics, alongside building her leadership skills.
