Seeking a career in science education for African growth? We are looking for a Science Laboratory Technician to come join our Engineering team. Ashesi is a world-class liberal arts university located at Berekuso, approximately an hour's drive from Accra, Ghana’s capital city. The new position will be based in the Department of Engineering, newly created at Ashesi’s campus in Berekuso. The technician will play a vital role in setting up the science laboratory for world-class education, and will report to the Dean of Engineering.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complementing the science teaching in laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to faculty and students
  • Liaising with faculty to discuss equipment requirements and work plans
  • Running trials of experiments prior to classes and demonstrating techniques for experiments
  • Preparing equipment before lessons
  • Working with students and supporting them on research projects
  • Maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus
  • Ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned and that materials are appropriately stored
  • Managing the stock control of equipment and keeping appropriate records
  • Developing a laboratory safety programme, and ensuring that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly

Qualifications, Experience & Skills

  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in basic sciences or mechanics
  • Thee (3) years of working experience in a laboratory environment
  • Enthusiastic about working with faculty and students in an academic and research environment
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Good communication skills (spoken and written)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Analytical Skills

Additional Desirable Attributes

  • Experience in working in a college/university environment
  • Bilingual (English and French)
  • Experience with electronics laboratories as well
  • This position would ideally suit an individual who is a self-starter, good team player and is willing to continuously learn. He/She must be well organized and display a high level of maturity and confidentiality when dealing with academic related matters. Ethical behaviour will be of prime importance in this role
