January 17, 2017 - A group of students from Wheaton College, Massachusetts, visited Ashesi to engage with members of the community to learn about student life and student projects. The group, led by Wheaton president, Dennis Hanno, was in Ghana as part of an annual outreach trip to underserved communities in selected rural areas in the Western Region of Ghana.
At Ashesi, the group toured the campus and engaged with Ashesi students about community engagement initiatives. Hosted by the Office of Diversity and International Programs, the visit, most importantly, helped boost the existing relationship Wheaton and Ashesi share.
"It's important that students from Wheaton have the opportunity to come see Ashesi for themselves to build an interest towards the exchange program," said Rosemary Kotei, International Programs Officer at Ashesi. "It helps foster that interaction and creates awareness for students on both ends.”
For ten years running, Wheaton President, Dennis Hanno has led groups of students on the trip which is geared towards teaching social innovation and leadership to Ghanaian high school students. The visit to Ashesi forms the last leg of the trip, allowing the students to learn about Ashesi and its community engagement initiatives.
“I am proud to have been associated with Ashesi all these years in many small ways," said President Hanno. "And to come here in 2017 to see and learn what the students here are doing and the vision that has driven this institution is remarkable.”
Ashesi continues to expand its partnerships with other liberal arts colleges for exchange programs. Currently, study abroad partners include Coe College, Iowa, Macalester College, Minnesota, Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, Wheaton College, Massachusetts, College of Wooster, Ohio, Connecticut College and Goucher College.
