Ashesi sophomore, George Sylvanus Niikoi Neequaye has been selected to participate in the Semester at Sea programme as Ghana's Interport Student. George is the third Ashesi student to join the programme after Esenam Dogoe and Nii Ayertei Tetteh, who were selected to receive Semester at Sea scholarships in January this year and in July 2009 respectively.
George, a computer science student, has already taken steps to set up a branch of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering), the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology, at Ashesi; he has expressed excitement at the opportunity to meet university students from other parts of the globe and to see other parts of West Africa.
George will travel to Morocco to join the Semester at Sea ship, the MV Explorer, as it sails down Africa’s West Coast to Ghana. George will serve as a shipboard ambassador for Ghana, sharing Ghanaian culture and values with other Semester at Sea students from across the globe.
The Semester at Sea is a premier international shipboard study abroad programme that gives college students the rare opportunity to circumnavigate the globe and see how the rest of the world lives. Instead of the traditional study abroad programmes, where participants travel to a country of their choice, Semester at Sea participants spend sixteen weeks on board the MV Explorer, which serves as a floating campus. They travel from country to country, learning about different cultures and taking part in community service projects in each country. Each Semester at Sea Voyage usually covers about 11 or 12 countries.
The Semester at Sea program in Ghana is being organized by LandTours Ghana Limited, a private travel company that has been operating in the country for the past decade. LandTours will organize dozens of trips for Semester at Sea students all over Ghana to help them learn more about our rich culture and traditions.
